The same window applies in both directions: a lane is as long one way as the other. Transit is driving days from the load date, not calendar days from booking, and both ends of the spread go on your bill of lading.

We are movers, not a relocation guide, so this is the version from the truck: what actually decides a Texas move, whichever way you are going.
30 days to register a vehicle after you arrive
No income tax, and a deadline with a catch
Texas levies no state income tax on wages, and it gives a new resident thirty days to register an out-of-state vehicle. The catch is what comes first: in seventeen counties, including the Dallas, Houston and Austin areas, the vehicle needs a passing emissions inspection before it can be registered. So the thirty days is not thirty days of paperwork, it is thirty days to get an inspection and then register. If we are shipping your car as well as your household goods, the auto transport delivery date is what starts that clock, and a coordinator will line it up with the house rather than leaving you to reconcile two dates.
Three metros, three different move types
Our Texas volume is Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston and Austin, and they do not behave alike. DFW and the Houston suburbs are wide streets and driveways: the straightforward full-trailer delivery. Austin's central neighborhoods and the hill-country roads west of the city are narrow and steep, and that is where a shuttle gets planned. Corporate relocations run through all three and bring a start date somebody else set, which is the date a delivery spread is built backwards from.
Houston is on the coast; the other two are not
The Atlantic season, 1 June to 30 November, matters to a Houston delivery and barely touches Dallas or Austin, so we widen the spread where it needs widening rather than across the state. Between August and October a Gulf coast window is wider, we will not load a truck into a named-storm warning, and an evacuation order turns the outbound interstates into contraflow, which is a road a loaded trailer does not use. A booked move is rescheduled at no charge rather than driven into it.

Federal rules give you nine months from delivery to file a written claim on an interstate move. We acknowledge within 30 days and settle, deny or make an offer within 120.

They then promptly got to work, packing 85 boxes of books and various other household items with impressive speed. Within the first seven hours, they had packed and loaded one of the trucks, thoughtfully leaving me an area to sleep, eat, and handle my emails. The following morning, they were punctual, arriving shortly after seven. By just after nine, my house was emptied, cleaned, and all my belongings were securely loaded onto the trucks. The new location was close to the old one, and the team swiftly unloaded, unwrapped, and arranged everything in my new home. (They left the unpacking of the books to me.) The team from Cross Country Movers Group then departed just before noon. Their service was remarkably quick, smooth, meticulous, and efficient. The cherry on top was that the final cost came in under the initial estimate, making for a satisfying conclusion to the moving process.

I have to leave off one star because there was a LOT of drama in delivery — after waiting nearly 3 weeks for delivery I was told my stuff would be delivered after the "guaranteed" deadline. Three hours arguing over the phone got them to make the delivery happen in the agreed upon time. Other than being without my things for 3 weeks — almost longer — it was an overall positive experience! All my items are accounted for and looking good. Thanks to everyone, especially Tim, for your help!
Moving in and out of Texas: the practical part
We run into and out of Texas every month, most often Houston, Dallas and Austin. We run into Florida, Georgia and Virginia on the same crews. The move itself is the predictable part: a survey fixes the inventory and the weight, the weight and the mileage fix the price, and the price goes on the paperwork before anything is loaded.
Three metros, three different moving days
Houston and Dallas are generally good access: suburban driveways a full trailer can reach, and the constraint is usually traffic timing rather than the vehicle. Austin is the outlier. Downtown high-rise moves there need a booked loading dock and lift, and the booking is the thing with a lead time. If your destination is a central Austin building, the managing agent’s contact details on the first call are worth more to your schedule than anything else you can tell us.
From Texas, both coasts cost about the same
Texas prices from the middle: the California and New York columns above sit within a few hundred dollars of each other at the most common size, because from Houston or Dallas the line-haul west and the line-haul east are comparable. The spread inside each column is weight. A studio and a four-bedroom house are different trucks’ worth of work on the same road.
Choosing a month out of Houston
Out of Houston, a November date carries a narrower written window than a September one. The difference is width, not money, and it is the one piece of calendar arithmetic a Texas move asks for. Book four to six weeks ahead for summer dates in any of the three metros, two to three otherwise, and take the calendar as it comes.
What we need from you on the first call
Two ZIP codes, a date you are working towards, and roughly how many rooms. That is enough for a coordinator to tell you which lane you are on, what the realistic spread is, and whether anything about either address is going to need a shuttle or a permit. Everything after that is the survey.
