Austin's moving truck permit, and how Dallas and Houston differ

Austin is the only city we work in where the permit has two deadlines and one of them is easy to miss.

Where a moving truck or a portable container will use street parking, the city requires a right-of-way permit. The request has to be submitted at least three business days before the date, and it has to be paid at least two business days before. Those are separate steps, and a permit filed on time but paid late is not a permit — which is a genuinely easy way to lose a move date. Austin is also the only city here that makes notifying the neighbors part of the requirement.

It applies in both directions, because the permit is about a truck occupying the public right-of-way rather than about which way you are going — a delivery into Austin needs it on the same terms as a pickup. If you are moving to Austin, the Texas guide covers the arrival end.

The fees come in three categories: an application fee for reviewing the permit, a usage fee which is effectively rent on the public right-of-way, and an inspection fee. Which apply depends on the permit type, so it goes on the estimate as a line rather than as a guess.

It is worth seeing this next to the rest of Texas, because one state regulator covers three completely different curbs. Dallas has no permit at all and simply ties the right to be there to active loading. Houston caps a trailer at two hours whatever it is doing. Austin issues a permit, charges rent for the space, and asks you to tell the people either side. Anybody who has moved in one of the three and assumes the same applies in another is in for a surprise. The carrier rules are federal and the curb rules are local, which is why the states and cities we serve each read a little differently.

Do I need a permit for the truck?

A move that starts and ends in Texas requires an active TxDMV certificate — you can look any company up in the state’s own register, which TxDMV calls Truck Stop. Texas also lets a shipper request mediation in writing.

What is my furniture actually insured for?
