30 days to register, and an inspection comes with it
Three things stack up in your first month
Virginia gives a new resident thirty days to register, and the registration itself requires a safety inspection, plus emissions where the locality demands it. Virginia is then one of the few states that inspects every registered vehicle annually thereafter, not once. And separately, every Virginia city and county levies an annual personal property tax on the vehicle itself, at a rate the locality sets, so the same car costs a different amount to keep in one county than in the next. That last one surprises almost everybody, and it is worth knowing before you choose which suburb to move to rather than after.
Loudoun and Arlington are opposite problems
Northern Virginia hires into data centers and federal contracting: Loudoun County's own economic development material calls the Ashburn corridor the data center capital of the world, and it is the densest concentration of them anywhere. Those jobs put people into new Loudoun subdivisions, which are easy deliveries with one catch: many sit on HOA-governed private streets that want notice before a trailer arrives. Arlington and Alexandria are the reverse: mid-rise buildings, a booked dock and a permit.
Inland, but still inside the season
Virginia is not a Gulf coast state and does not need to be treated like one, but the Atlantic season from 1 June to 30 November still reaches it, usually as the remains of a system rather than the system itself. What that does to a move is practical rather than dramatic: a wet unload, an access road briefly worse than it was at survey, occasionally a day. It is why a September window here is a spread and not a date.

After reaching out to the technician, he reassured me that they could handle the job of moving my tenants out over two consecutive weekends. He was agreeable and flexible to my needs. On the day of the first move, he was punctual and we reviewed all the items in the apartment that needed relocation. Afterward, he briefed his two team members, who happened to be among the friendliest people i've ever encountered. They were extremely careful and patient. The following week, they returned promptly and completed the rest of the move. i can't recommend the technician and his team enough – they are real pros at what they do and you won't be let down. Their rates are very fair considering the successful outcome. I'll be enlisting their services for a third time soon.

The phone call took less than 20 mins and the movers were scheduled the next day amazingly. They were much accurate in their phone estimate and overall professional than the last company so I must say that I am very satisfied with their service. It is a few bucks more but in the end it's definitely worth the hassle.

I've had the pleasure of working with them for over five years now. Their crew members are tremendously professional and incredibly efficient. They're always prepared and punctual, showing great attention and care to all items. They've become an integral part of my staging team, diligently assembling and placing my pieces exactly where I need them. They've even managed to pull off the seemingly impossible task of fitting a large couch through a garden door! Working in Modesto, with its crowded streets and three to four-story townhouses with tight spaces, can be quite challenging. But these movers handle it with ease and a smile on their faces. And what's more, their services come at a very reasonable price. Quite simply, I couldn't imagine moving anything without them!
Moving in and out of Virginia: the practical part
We run into and out of Virginia every month, most often Richmond. We run into Florida, Georgia and Texas on the same crews. The move itself is the predictable part: a survey fixes the inventory and the weight, the weight and the mileage fix the price, and the price goes on the paperwork before anything is loaded.
Wet-weather unloads are the normal case here
Floor protection and covered carries are standard on our crews rather than an extra, and Virginia is one of the states where that earns its keep: a September or October delivery has a real chance of happening in rain. It is worth saying out loud because it changes nothing about the price and quite a lot about the day.
Richmond, and everywhere else
Richmond is where our Virginia volume is and where we know the access before arriving. Elsewhere in the state, Northern Virginia especially, the destination is often a managed building or a townhouse development with its own rules about truck access, loading areas and hours, and those rules are set by a management company rather than by the city. Chicago is a three-day run from Richmond; the coast is a week
Richmond to Chicago is 797 miles with a three-to-six-day window; Richmond to Los Angeles is 2,617 and seven to eleven. Say what the origin is, not just where it is
The two Virginias this page describes book differently. A Richmond driveway needs a date.
