Virginia draws its moving license line at thirty miles
Virginia is the only state we work in that draws its regulatory line by distance rather than by border, and thirty miles is where it falls.
A mover handling trips longer than thirty miles inside Virginia needs a Certificate of Fitness from the DMV. Under thirty miles it does not. The practical effect is that moving across Richmond and moving to Norfolk are two different regulatory situations, and only one of them requires the certificate — which is worth knowing before somebody tells you their credentials cover both.
What the certificate requires is unusually specific, and that is a gift to anybody checking. A Virginia household goods carrier must file a tariff listing its rates and policies, carry at least $750,000 of liability insurance and $50,000 of cargo insurance, and post a $50,000 surety bond. Those are numbers you can ask about and verify in the DMV’s motor carrier database, rather than adjectives on a website.
