Florida levies no state income tax on wages, which is checkable and is the reason behind a large share of the moves we run into Miami. The counterweight is the calendar: the Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and deliveries into the coast get a wider spread between August and October because that is when the season actually bites. We will not load a truck into a named-storm warning, and a booked move that has to be rescheduled for one is rescheduled at no charge rather than driven into.

The move is often a company's, not a person's

A large share of the recent growth into Miami and West Palm Beach has been financial services and headquarters relocation, and that changes the paperwork more than the logistics. An employer-paid move has a start date somebody else set, an approval chain, and often an invoice that has to be addressed to the company rather than to you. We quote those exactly the same way: say so on the first call and it is set up correctly rather than corrected afterwards.

How a long distance move runs

After the truck is loaded

The part most movers do not put in writing. These are your rights and our obligations on an interstate move in or out of Florida, in the order they happen.

  1. You get a spread, not a date

    Your bill of lading carries a delivery window, 3–7 days in driving days on Northeast lanes. A single promised date on an interstate move is a date somebody intends to miss.

  2. The driver calls ahead

    You get 24 hours of notice before delivery so somebody can be at the property. If the new place is not ready, the shipment goes into storage in transit rather than onto your driveway.

  3. Check it before you sign

    Walk the inventory against the sheet at delivery and note anything damaged on the paperwork before signing. That note is what makes a later claim straightforward instead of contested.

  4. You have nine months to claim

    Federal rules give you nine months from delivery to file a written claim on an interstate move. We acknowledge within 30 days and settle, deny or make an offer within 120.

Moving in and out of Florida: the practical part

We run into and out of Florida every month, most often Miami. We run into Georgia, Texas and Virginia on the same crews. The move itself is the predictable part: a survey fixes the inventory and the weight, the weight and the mileage fix the price, and the price goes on the paperwork before anything is loaded.

Moving during the season

Most Florida moves in hurricane season are entirely uneventful, and the ones that are not tend to fail in a predictable way: a shipment arrives in the right week and cannot be delivered because the destination has no power, or a building will not allow an elevator booking while a storm is tracking. Thirty days of storage in transit is included on our long distance moves for exactly this situation: the shipment sits in a facility we control on a date you set rather than on your driveway. If you are moving into a coastal address between August and October, say so on the first call and the plan is built with that option already in it.

New York and Chicago are the same haul from Miami

Miami to New York is 1,281 miles and Miami to Chicago 1,377, near enough the same run that their delivery windows match. California is twice either, and the two cost columns above split along that line: the Illinois band is the short-haul price, the California band the long one. Weight does the rest, and the survey is where weight stops being a guess.

Florida’s cheap months and its calm months mostly agree

The industry’s May-to-September peak sits almost entirely inside the June-to-November season, so the quiet months for booking are also, for the most part, the months with ordinary windows. A spring or early-winter date gets you both: an ordinary price and an ordinary spread. If the date cannot move, the plan carries the season’s width in writing.

If the shipment is already in transit and the destination is not safely reachable, it goes into storage in transit, included for thirty days on long distance moves, rather than being delivered into a property without power. You are told before the window ends, not after.
