Moving from California to Florida
Florida starts two clocks the day you count as a resident, and the short one is ten days: insure the car with a Florida-licensed agent, then title and register it. The license gets thirty. Neither clock waits for the truck, because residency is triggered by a job, a school enrollment or a voter card — not by your furniture arriving.

Weight is what an interstate price is built on, so it is the number worth getting right at survey. We do not put a dollar figure on a web page: a 4,000 lb studio and a 6,000 lb two-bed are different moves, and a headline price that ignores that is a price that changes later.
What changes at the far end of I-10
This is a state pair, so there is no single distance and this page will not pretend to one. Los Angeles to Jacksonville is 2,415 road miles and San Francisco to Miami is 3,037 — a 622-mile spread inside one "lane". The curiosity is the diagonals: Los Angeles to Miami and San Francisco to Jacksonville land within about ten miles of each other, around 2,720. Which corner pair your move actually is gets settled at survey, because it decides both the mileage and the window.
The tax difference, both halves of it
Florida levies no state income tax on wages. California’s side is worth stating precisely: the famous 13.3% applies only above a million dollars of taxable income, so almost nobody pays it — the rate every salary feels is SDI at 1.3%, which has applied to every dollar of wages since the cap was removed in 2024.
The counterweight is not income tax, it is the homeowner insurance bill. Florida premiums and named-storm deductibles are the line item that eats payroll savings for owners, and a California seller also walks away from a Proposition 13 assessment that was probably far below market. For renters the arithmetic is clean; for owners it deserves a spreadsheet, not a slogan.
Ten days, and the clock starts before the truck
Florida gives a new resident ten days to insure the vehicle with a Florida-licensed agent and have it titled and registered, and thirty days to swap the license. The part nobody expects: residency is triggered by accepting a job, enrolling a child in school, registering to vote or filing for homestead — so the clocks can be running before the shipment arrives. An out-of-state vehicle also needs a VIN verification, which is a signature on a form from law enforcement, a dealer or the tax collector’s office, not a test.
Which Florida, though
"Florida" is at least four different moves. Jacksonville and the northeast is the closest to California by road and the most ordinary to deliver into. Orlando and the center is landlocked and logistically easy. Tampa and the gulf side adds a little distance and a lot of waterfront. Miami and the southeast is the far corner — six hundred miles beyond Jacksonville — with the density problems of a real city: buildings with loading docks, managers who want certificates of insurance, streets that argue with a 53-foot trailer.
The season is a scheduling fact, not a footnote
Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November. We do not promise a delivery window through a named storm; we plan the window around the forecast, which occasionally means a day moves. October through April avoids the question entirely and is cheaper anyway, because summer is peak on every lane.
What decides this move
Three things set the day, and the distance is not one of them
The mileage never changes. These do, and all three are settled at survey rather than on moving day.
10 days to insure, title and register
The ten-day clock
Florida gives new residents ten days to insure the car with a Florida-licensed agent and register it, and thirty for the license. The clocks start at residency, which a job or a school enrollment triggers before the truck arrives. The out-of-state vehicle also needs a VIN verification — a form, not a test.
0% Florida state tax on wages
The tax picture
No state income tax on wages in Florida. California's 13.3% is a ceiling above a million dollars; the rate a normal salary feels is SDI at 1.3% on every dollar since the cap was removed in 2024. Florida's counterweight is the homeowner insurance bill, and for owners it is not a footnote.
2,415–3,037 road miles, depending on the ends
No single distance
Los Angeles to Jacksonville is 2,415 miles and San Francisco to Miami is 3,037. The odd fact: LA to Miami and SF to Jacksonville land within ten miles of each other, around 2,720. A state pair has no one number, so this page gives the range and names the ends.
What it costs
What a California to Florida move involves
Weight and transit, which is the structure of the price. Not a dollar figure — a studio and a four-bedroom are thousands apart, and a headline number that ignores that is one that changes later.
| Home size | Typical weight | Transit | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1 bed one bedroom of contents | 2,000 – 3,500 lb | 6–10 days | 6–9 days |
| 2 bedrooms the most common interstate move | 4,000 – 6,000 lb | 6–10 days | 6–10 days |
| 3 bedrooms usually most of a trailer | 7,000 – 9,000 lb | 6–10 days | 7–10 days |
| 4+ bedrooms often a truck of its own | 10,000 – 14,000 lb | 6–10 days | 7–10 days |
Weight ranges are an industry rule of thumb, not a measurement of your home. Transit is driving days once loaded and both ends of the spread go on your paperwork. The only number that binds is the one after a survey.

-
Survey, and which corner
Video or in person. Fixes the inventory and the weight, and settles which corner pair the move actually is — Jacksonville is six hundred road miles closer to California than Miami is.
-
Load, then six to ten days
Wrapped, labeled and inventoried. Six to ten driving days depending on the endpoints, written as a spread on the bill of lading.
-
Ten days: insure, title, register
Florida wants the car insured by a Florida-licensed agent, then titled and registered, within ten days of residency. The VIN verification is a signature on a form; get it done with the registration errand.
-
Thirty days: the license
In person, at a driver license office. Both clocks run from the day residency is established — a job, a school enrollment or a voter registration starts them, not the truck.
Protection
Moving insurance: what your belongings are covered for
Two levels, and the one you get by default is the better one. Released value is free and pays 60 cents a pound — you have to ask for it. Full value protection is the federal default if you make no written choice, and it is what we quote.

I want to give full marks to the Cross Country Movers. Best services at all. Saved money. Didn't get any problem on move. None of my furniture or antique piece was damaged or lost. Last year I used a mover and they didn't pack my items flawlessly and some of things were out of tress. So I was very careful during my recent move. This movers also took care of my stuffs. So it was my less stressful and painless day. They are 100% professional crews. He is also excited enough! I hope and have trust that his journey will be like my move. I will recommend them to my associates. Couple of them have plan for moving.

i'm really thankful and don't even know where to begin. i first encountered the technician in autumn to help me shift my one bedroom apartment into a pod. him and another worker managed to move everything in less than two hours! they were quick, efficient and ensured everything was piled up neatly and securely. the technician was also a great conversationalist which helped the time fly by. fast forward to now, i reached out to the same technician to assist me with moving into my new residence and he readily agreed! the move was a bit more complicated this time but he didn't throw in the towel, he tried all possible solutions and finally made it happen! i know if i ever have to move again, he's definitely the first one i'll be contacting! i would recommend him and his team if you're aiming for a quick and hassle-free move. thank you once again, it was really great working with you! 10 out of 10!

My Uncle has a used car lot in Portland and offered me a car for a really good price . He recommended Cross Country Movers because he's used them before with no issues . I gave them a ring and set up a pick up day. They gave me a flat fee for the delivery and I had my car in no time ! Without these guys I probably wouldn't have purchased a car from out of state

the ten-day clock is the argument
How much does it cost to move from California to Florida?
It depends on weight and on which corners, and the corners matter more here than on most lanes — the endpoints differ by over six hundred miles. A studio and a four-bedroom are thousands apart on the same route. Ten minutes on the phone gets a real range; a survey gets a binding number.
How long does California to Florida take?
Six to ten driving days once loaded, depending on the endpoints. Both ends of the spread go on your bill of lading, and they are driving days rather than calendar days from booking.
Can you ship my car along with the furniture?
Yes, on one contract, open or enclosed trailer. And Florida wants the car insured, titled and registered within ten days of residency whichever way it travels, so it is a decision worth making early rather than at the far end.
Is Florida actually cheaper than California?
On payroll, yes by definition: zero state income tax against California's brackets plus uncapped SDI. For homeowners the honest answer adds the insurance line — Florida premiums and named-storm deductibles are the counterweight, and a California seller also gives up a Proposition 13 assessment that was probably far below market. Renters get the clean version of the win.
When is the best time to move to Florida?
October to April, twice over. Summer is peak on every lane and priced like it, and hurricane season runs June through November — a named storm can move a delivery window, and we plan around the forecast rather than promising through it.
