Moving from Chicago to Austin
Austin is the only city we serve where reserving the curb involves your neighbors, and where the permit has two deadlines rather than one: submitted three business days ahead, paid two. A permit submitted on time and paid late is still not a permit.
- 3–7 days written spread
- One truck no partner transfer
- Binding price after survey
- USDOT 2138595 · MC-744411 checkable on FMCSA SAFER
- Distance
- 1,150 mi driving miles, door to door
- Transit
- 3–7 days driving days once loaded
- Typical 2-bed
- 4,000–6,000 lb shipment weight
- Austin permit
- 3 + 2 days submit, then pay — two deadlines
Weight is what an interstate price is built on, so it is the number worth getting right at survey. We do not put a dollar figure on a web page: a 4,000 lb studio and a 6,000 lb two-bed are different moves, and a headline price that ignores that is a price that changes later.
What changes between the two ends
Eleven hundred and fifty miles is the shortest of our long lanes, which makes the two curbs the interesting part rather than the road.
Austin has two deadlines, and only one of them is the obvious one
A City Right-of-Way parking permit is required where a truck or a portable container will occupy street parking. The request must be submitted at least three business days before the date and paid at least two business days before it. Those are separate clocks. A permit sitting unpaid on the afternoon before the move is not a permit, and nowhere else on this site separates the two.
Fees fall into three categories — application, usage and inspection — with the usage fee being rent for the public right-of-way itself. We do not publish the amounts, because the city sets them and a stale number on a web page is worse than no number. Our editorial standards set out where the figures we do print come from and how often they are re-checked.
Austin is also the only endpoint that involves the neighbors
Neighbor notification is part of the requirement. No other city we serve asks for it. Coming from Chicago, where a curb is bought from CDOT and nobody is consulted, that is a genuine change of register — a social step in the middle of an administrative process.
And Chicago has a trap on the way out
There are two kinds of no-parking sign in Chicago and only one works. A ward courtesy sign is free and, in the ward offices’ own words, non-enforceable; a CDOT permit sign is ticket-and-tow enforceable, is issued to eligible moving companies and covers the day of the move. Three to five business days is the sensible lead time. The forty-eight hours widely quoted alongside this is the ward office asking a resident to post the free sign two days ahead — not a condition of the paid one. “Dibs”, the chair in the shoveled space, is a local norm and stops no tow.
Three Texas cities, three rules, one regulator
Worth knowing before you assume Austin behaves like the last Texas city you moved in, because it does not. Dallas ties the curb to active loading — no clock, but no idling either. Houston caps a trailer at two hours. Austin issues a permit and tells the neighbors. One state regulator, the TxDMV, sits above all three.
From an apartment to a house, which changes the load-in completely
The reason most people give for this move is space: the same budget that buys a two-bedroom condo facing a light well in Chicago buys a single-family house with a garage and a yard around Austin. That is a housing story everywhere else and an access story here. A Chicago high-rise unload is a booked lift, a dock and a building-set time window. An Austin house unload is a driveway, a garage, stairs inside rather than out, and a crew that can reach the front door with the trailer — plus the right-of-way permit and the notified neighbors if the street parking is needed at all. Those are different days. It is also why a survey asks about the driveway rather than the floor number.
The cost shape flips rather than simply falling
Texas has no state income tax on wages and funds itself on property tax, at a rate above what Illinois homeowners are used to seeing per dollar of value. So a renter usually sees a straightforward gain and an owner sees a trade. Utilities move the other way from what people expect too: the Chicago winter heating bill is replaced by an Austin summer cooling bill, and in a house with more square footage than the condo it replaced. None of that makes the move a bad idea; it makes the arithmetic worth doing on your own numbers rather than on an average.
And the year runs differently
Chicago hibernates from November to April; Austin does the opposite and hides from July and August. For a move that matters in one practical way: the comfortable loading months at one end are the expensive ones at the other, and a February load-out in Chicago onto a truck heading south is one of the easier days of the year to buy.
What decides this move
Three things set the day, and the distance is not one of them
The mileage never changes. These do, and all three are settled at survey rather than on moving day.
3 + 2 business days: submit, then pay
Two deadlines
Austin wants the right-of-way request three business days ahead and the payment two. They are separate clocks and missing the second voids the first. It is the failure a customer can actually walk into, and it is ours to prevent.
Notified the only endpoint that requires it
Austin also notifies the neighbors
Neighbor notification is part of Austin's requirement and part of no other city's on this site. Coming from a city where the curb is simply bought, it is a step nobody expects.
Two kinds only one is enforceable
The Chicago sign
A ward courtesy sign is free and nobody has to obey it. A CDOT permit sign is ticket-and-tow enforceable. Getting the wrong one at the origin is how a load turns into a long carry.
What it costs
What a Chicago to Austin move involves
Weight and transit, which is the structure of the price. Not a dollar figure — a studio and a four-bedroom are thousands apart, and a headline number that ignores that is one that changes later.
| Home size | Typical weight | Transit | Usual arrangement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1 bed one bedroom of contents | 2,000 – 3,500 lb | 3–7 days | shared trailer |
| 2 bedrooms the most common interstate move | 4,000 – 6,000 lb | 3–7 days | shared trailer |
| 3 bedrooms usually most of a trailer | 7,000 – 9,000 lb | 3–7 days | full trailer share |
| 4+ bedrooms often a truck of its own | 10,000 – 14,000 lb | 3–7 days | dedicated trailer |
Weight ranges are an industry rule of thumb, not a measurement of your home. Transit is driving days once loaded and both ends of the spread go on your paperwork. The only number that binds is the one after a survey.

Protection
Moving insurance: what your belongings are covered for
Two levels, and the one you get by default is the better one. Released value is free and pays 60 cents a pound — you have to ask for it. Full value protection is the federal default if you make no written choice, and it is what we quote.
- 60¢ / lb
- released value — free, but you have to choose it
- Full value
- the federal default if you choose nothing
- $100 / lb
- extraordinary value — declare it in writing
Full value protection is the federal default. Released value is the one you have to ask for.

Thanks to these guys, my move was easy and fast. They were recommended by a friend and he insisted I hire them. And I am glad I listened to her. After booking this team for my move, I was still a bit worried. But they clearly changed all that on the moving day. The foreman and his 3 helpers came on time and were very active. They did not sit around and do nothing, they worked the entire time. As a result of their hard work, all my things were intact. Thank you very much.

I used his moving company to relocate my entire office to a different location. Those guys are great. They packed everything carefully, nothing got damage, they are very professional and friendly. I highly recommend them.

what changes at the state line
How far in advance should I book?
Four to six weeks in normal months and longer for a summer date. The binding constraint is usually the survey rather than the truck: the permit clocks at the Austin end are short, but they cannot start until the date is fixed.
How long will it take for my belongings to arrive?
Three to seven driving days once loaded. Both ends of the spread go on your bill of lading, and it is driving days rather than calendar days from booking.
Do I really need professional packers?
No, and plenty of people pack themselves. What changes is the claim: an item packed by the owner is treated differently from one packed by the carrier if it arrives damaged, and that difference is worth knowing before you decide rather than after.
Is my property covered during the move?
Under full value protection, which is the federal default unless you sign it away for released value at 60 cents a pound. Neither is insurance in the state-law sense — they are federal levels of carrier liability, which decides who a claim is against.
Can I ship my car and move my furniture with the same company?
Yes, on one contract. On 1,150 miles the arithmetic is closer than on a coast-to-coast lane, so it is worth pricing both ways.
