Weight is what an interstate price is built on, so it is the number worth getting right at survey. We do not put a dollar figure on a web page: a 4,000 lb studio and a 6,000 lb two-bed are different moves, and a headline price that ignores that is a price that changes later.
What changes between the two ends
Just under twelve hundred miles, and the interesting difference is that neither end sells you a reserved curb — but only one of them is documented well enough to plan around.
Dallas: no permit, and no standing about either
Dallas prohibits parking a commercial vehicle on a public street, alley or parkway unless it is actively loading or unloading. A moving truck may use a Resident Parking Only zone, but only for the duration of the load. There is no permit to buy and no clock to beat — what there is instead is a requirement that the truck be working the whole time it is there. Dallas Transportation: (214) 670-6904.
That is a different plan from a permitted curb. It means the crew stages to keep the truck loading continuously rather than parking it and coming back, and it is why the survey asks about the driveway and the approach rather than about a permit.
Detroit: what we can tell you, and what we will not pretend to
The City of Detroit publishes Right-of-Way permits for construction activity in a street, alley, sidewalk or berm, and a separate Oversize / Overweight Load Move permit for heavy haulage — $200 one way, $400 round trip, plus $20 per vehicle. Neither of those is a household move.
Two ordinance points do apply and are worth knowing: no truck may stand on the public right-of-way waiting to get into a site, and parking on the lawn or any unpaved part of a residential lot is not allowed. Beyond that, whether Detroit issues a household-move curb instrument at all is something we will confirm with the City rather than guess at — the number is City Engineering Permits, (313) 224-3935. Several moving-industry websites quote a $25 to $75 residential permit with a 72-hour lead. None of them cites the City, so none of them is on this page.
There is also a truck ban in force on some Southwest Detroit streets since October 2025. If your origin is in that area it changes the approach, and it is a question for the survey.
Weight, not volume
An interstate carrier prices by the weight of the shipment. The survey is where the estimate becomes binding, and a binding estimate is what stops the number moving on the day.
There is no basement, and it changes what you should ship
This is the detail that catches Michigan movers out, and it is geological rather than architectural. In North Texas, shifting clay soil and a high water table make basements extremely rare — the whole house sits above ground. A Metro Detroit brick colonial or mid-century ranch usually has one, and a basement is where a household keeps the things it has decided not to decide about: the second freezer, the workshop, the seasonal boxes, the furniture between houses.
All of that has to go somewhere else, and in a Texas house the somewhere else is a garage that also has to hold cars. So the decluttering conversation on this lane is not a lifestyle suggestion, it is arithmetic: the receiving house has materially less storage volume than the one you are leaving, whatever its square footage says. We would rather have that conversation at survey than at the curb in Dallas with a trailer running.
The tax shape inverts
Michigan levies a flat 4.25% state income tax; Texas levies none on wages. Texas funds itself on property tax instead, at a rate above what Michigan homeowners are used to. A renter usually sees a clean gain. An owner sees a trade whose direction depends on the house. It is worth running on your own numbers rather than on a headline.
Winter clothes: keep some
Dallas gets freezing nights and the occasional ice event, and 2021 demonstrated that a Texas cold snap is a different animal from a Michigan one but not a harmless one. The packing question is not whether to keep coats but which — the ones worn daily rather than the ones owned.
