Moving from Texas to California

Same road as our California to Texas page, run the other way — the mileage does not care about direction. What changes is everything administrative: California wants a license in ten days and the car registered in twenty, with a smog check in front of the registration, and the tax arithmetic flips both halves at once.

Weight is what an interstate price is built on, so it is the number worth getting right at survey. We do not put a dollar figure on a web page: a 4,000 lb studio and a 6,000 lb two-bed are different moves, and a headline price that ignores that is a price that changes later.

What changes at the state line, westbound

The road is the one our California to Texas page measures, run in reverse: Austin to Los Angeles is 1,375 miles, Dallas to San Francisco 1,731, and the window is the same four to nine driving days in either direction — a lane is as long one way as the other. If the two pages ever disagreed about the road, one of them would be wrong. What is genuinely different westbound is the paperwork waiting at the far end.

Two clocks, and they run in the opposite order

Texas gives arrivals 30 days for the vehicle and 90 for the license, with the vehicle gating the license. California flips it: the license has ten days and the vehicle has twenty, with penalties that begin on day 21. Anyone who has read the eastbound page will assume the same shape and be wrong — here the license is the first errand, not the last.

The smog check comes first

The first California registration of a gasoline vehicle from model year 1976 on — hybrids included — and of most diesels from 1998 needs a California smog certificate, whatever the vehicle passed in Texas. Stations transmit the result to the DMV electronically and it holds for ninety days, so it is one early errand rather than a round trip discovered at the counter.

The tax arithmetic, run in reverse

Arriving payroll meets California’s progressive brackets plus SDI at 1.3% on every dollar of wages — the cap came off in 2024 — while the famous 13.3% stays what it is everywhere: a ceiling above a million dollars that almost nobody pays.

The other half runs in the mover’s favor, and it rarely gets said: Proposition 13 protects arrivals too. A new California assessment is set at your purchase price and its annual growth is capped from there, while the Texas property-tax rate you are leaving is among the country’s highest. Which half wins depends on whether you rent or buy; for renters the question reduces to the payroll side alone.

Which California, though

The corner decides 379 miles. The Los Angeles basin is the near end from either Texas metro and the easier delivery; the Bay Area adds distance and the access questions our San Francisco page is blunt about — hills, permits and buildings that predate the truck. Between them sit the valley towns where the trailer simply parks outside. Which one you are moving to is the first survey question, because it sets the mileage, the window and the crew plan at the door.

What decides this move

Three things set the day, and the distance is not one of them

The mileage never changes. These do, and all three are settled at survey rather than on moving day.

The ten-day license

California's license clock is shorter than its vehicle clock — the reverse of Texas — and it starts at residency: a job, a lease, a school enrollment. Ten days disappears quickly inside an unpacking week, so it is the first errand on the list, not the last.

The smog check

A gasoline vehicle from 1976 on, hybrids included, needs a California smog certificate for its first registration here, whatever it passed in Texas. The station transmits the result electronically and it holds for ninety days — one early errand instead of a rejection at the DMV counter.

Prop 13 works for arrivals

The famous cap is not only for people who bought in 1980: a new California assessment is set at your purchase price with capped growth from there, while the Texas property-tax rate you are leaving is among the country's highest. The income tax runs the other way — which half wins depends on whether you rent or buy.

What it costs

What a Texas to California move involves

Weight and transit, which is the structure of the price. Not a dollar figure — a studio and a four-bedroom are thousands apart, and a headline number that ignores that is one that changes later.

Home size Typical weight Transit Transit
Studio or 1 bed one bedroom of contents 2,000 – 3,500 lb 4–9 days 4–8 days
2 bedrooms the most common interstate move 4,000 – 6,000 lb 4–9 days 4–9 days
3 bedrooms usually most of a trailer 7,000 – 9,000 lb 4–9 days 4–9 days
4+ bedrooms often a truck of its own 10,000 – 14,000 lb 4–9 days 5–9 days

Weight ranges are an industry rule of thumb, not a measurement of your home. Transit is driving days once loaded and both ends of the spread go on your paperwork. The only number that binds is the one after a survey.

How the run works

  1. Survey, and which city pair

Video or in person. Fixes the inventory and the weight, and settles which city pair the move actually is — that decides the mileage, the window and what the delivery street can take.

  2. Load, then four to nine days

Wrapped, labeled and inventoried. Four to nine driving days depending on the endpoints, written as a spread on the bill of lading — the same window as the eastbound page, because the road is the same road.

  3. License within ten days

In person at the DMV, and it is the shortest clock on this page, so it goes first. Residency starts it: a job, a lease, a school enrollment — not the truck's arrival.

  4. Smog, then register, within twenty

The smog certificate first — the station files it electronically and it holds for ninety days — then the registration, inside twenty days of residency. Penalties start on day 21 and grow monthly.

Protection

Moving insurance: what your belongings are covered for

Two levels, and the one you get by default is the better one. Released value is free and pays 60 cents a pound — you have to ask for it. Full value protection is the federal default if you make no written choice, and it is what we quote.

Both ends of this move

How much does it cost to move from Texas to California?

It depends on weight and on which two cities — the endpoints differ by nearly four hundred miles. A studio and a four-bedroom are thousands apart on the same route. Ten minutes on the phone gets a real range; a survey gets a binding number.

How long does Texas to California take?

Four to nine driving days once loaded, depending on the endpoints — the same window as the eastbound direction, because a lane is as long one way as the other. Both ends of the spread go on your bill of lading.

Do I need a smog check for a car I just had inspected in Texas?

Yes, if it is a 1976-or-newer gasoline vehicle, hybrids included: the first California registration needs a California smog certificate regardless of out-of-state inspections. The station transmits it electronically and it stays valid for ninety days, so done early it costs one errand.

Is moving to California a tax mistake?

Not automatically, and both halves deserve saying. Payroll meets California's brackets plus SDI on every dollar — but Proposition 13 sets your new property assessment at the purchase price and caps its growth, while the Texas rate you are leaving is among the country's highest. Renters feel only the payroll half; owners should run both numbers before believing either slogan.

Can you ship my car along with the furniture?

Yes, on one contract, open or enclosed. California wants it smogged and registered within twenty days of residency whichever way it travels — and the license within ten — so the errands are the same whether it rides or drives.
