Weight is what an interstate price is built on, so it is the number worth getting right at survey. We do not put a dollar figure on a web page: a 4,000 lb studio and a 6,000 lb two-bed are different moves, and a headline price that ignores that is a price that changes later.

What changes at the state line

This is a state pair rather than a city pair, and that changes what is worth telling you. There is no single distance: Los Angeles to Austin is 1,375 road miles and San Francisco to Dallas is 1,731, and both of those are figures already published on this site. A page that averaged them into one number would be making something up.

The tax difference, and the half of it nobody quotes

Texas levies no state income tax on wages. That is the headline and it is true.

California’s side is more interesting than the number usually cited. The famous 13.3% top marginal rate applies only above a million dollars of taxable income, so almost nobody pays it. The rate that reaches everybody is different: the SDI wage ceiling was removed on 1 January 2024, so the disability insurance rate — 1.3% for 2026 — now applies to every dollar of wages with no cap at all. That is the change a normal salary actually feels.

And the counter-argument, which belongs on this page

Texas funds itself on property tax, at a rate well above California’s. California caps assessed value under Proposition 13, so somebody who has owned a California house for twenty years pays property tax on a long-frozen valuation. Sell it, buy in Texas at today’s price, and the property tax bill can eat the income tax saving whole. Whether the move is cheaper depends on whether you rent or own, and for owners on how long you have owned. Anyone telling you it is simply cheaper is selling you something.

Two clocks on arrival, and one of them gates the other

Register the vehicle within 30 days. Get the Texas license within 90. Those look independent and are not: the DPS asks for proof of Texas registration when you apply for the license, so the vehicle has to go first. The deadline worth writing down is 30 days.

And in the metros people actually move to, registration has a prerequisite. Seventeen Texas counties require a passing emissions inspection before a vehicle can be registered — including Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Collin, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall, Johnson and Parker around Dallas–Fort Worth, and Travis and Williamson around Austin. Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for most non-commercial vehicles in January 2025, which is easy to confuse with this; they are different requirements and only one went away.

The grid is its own subject

Texas runs a power grid that is largely separate from the rest of the country, managed by ERCOT. That is a genuine difference from California and it is the reason a Texan conversation about winter weather sounds different from a Californian one.

Which Texas, though

"Texas" is four different moves and the difference matters more than the state line does. Austin and the Hill Country is the closest in feel to coastal California and the priciest of the four. Dallas–Fort Worth is a sprawl of distinct suburbs where the commute decides the neighborhood and the emissions counties are unavoidable. Greater Houston is the largest and the most humid, with a flood-plain question attached to any house you look at. San Antonio and the towns around it is the cheapest and the slowest. Which one you pick changes the mileage, the window, and whether the vehicle needs an emissions test before it can be registered.

And no basement, in any of them

Shifting clay soil and a high water table make basements extremely rare across most of Texas, so the whole house sits above ground. Californians usually arrive from houses without basements too, so this bites less here than on a Midwest lane — but it does mean the garage is the only storage volume in the building, and it is also where the cars go.

The summer is a moving constraint, not a lifestyle note

A July load-out in California onto a truck arriving in Texas in the same week is two hard days at both ends of it, and crews slow down for good reasons in that heat. October to April is easier work and cheaper, which is unusual — normally the comfortable month is the expensive one.

How much does it cost to move from California to Texas?
