San Jose's Tow-Away Permit holds the curb

San Jose does something San Diego does not: it sells you a curb that actually holds.

The city’s transport department issues a Tow-Away Permit, applied for through its getAPERMIT portal, covering the reservation of city streets or parking meters for moving trucks, moving pods and large residential gatherings. The name tells you what you are buying: a vehicle sitting in a permitted zone can be towed, which is the entire point of reserving a space. Forty minutes down the coast in San Diego there is no city permit at all and private firms sell signs for two hundred and fifty dollars that cannot ticket anybody. Same state, same regulator, opposite answers.

The rest of a San Jose move is suburban in the useful sense: wide streets, driveways and reachable doors in much of the city, which keeps the carry short and the crew size honest. Where the address is a managed building or a gated complex, the usual applies — the lift or the gate, the hours and a certificate of insurance to management, all settled at survey.

California requires a mover working inside the state to hold a CPUC household goods permit, the CAL-T, with no exemption for small operators. Our own authority is federal, since an interstate move is FMCSA: USDOT 2138595 and MC-744411.
