San Diego sells no moving permit, and private signs carry none

San Diego is one of the few large cities in the country that will not sell a mover a curb, and there is a trap attached.

The city’s parking permit programs cover residential permit parking and overnight recreational vehicles. They do not cover moves. What fills the gap is private firms selling and installing temporary no-parking signs, usually for something around two hundred and fifty dollars — and those signs carry no city authority at all. Nothing parked in front of one can be ticketed or towed. It is the same failure as a free courtesy sign in Chicago, except somebody has charged you for it.

So the honest plan here is access rather than reservation. At survey we work out where a trailer can lawfully and safely stand, how far the carry is from there, and whether the job needs a shuttle instead. On a hillside street in Mission Hills or a canyon address in Point Loma the answer is usually a shuttle, and that is a priced line rather than a surprise.

California is worth a word of its own. A mover working inside the state needs a CPUC household goods permit — a CAL-T number — and there is no exemption for small operators. Our own authority is federal, because an interstate move is FMCSA: USDOT 2138595 and MC-744411. For a move that stays inside California, ask for the CAL-T and check it.
