Portland prices the curb two ways, and the gap is large
Portland is the only city we work in where the curb is priced in two entirely different units, and the gap between them is large enough to plan around.
A qualifying non-metered reservation costs $70 a week for each twenty-by-eight-foot space. A metered reservation costs $87 a day for the same space. Over a week that is roughly six hundred dollars against seventy — nearly nine times the money, in the same city, decided entirely by which side of a line your address happens to sit on. PBOT asks for about five business days of notice either way.
It is worth knowing before the date is set, because sometimes there is a choice: a staging spot half a block away on an unmetered stretch, or a shorter reservation window, can move the number substantially. We look at that at survey rather than pricing the expensive option by default.
The streets themselves are the other Portland variable. Much of the inner east side and the older west-hills neighborhoods is narrow, tree-lined and parked solid on both sides, and a 53-foot trailer will not get to the door. Where it cannot, a smaller truck works the address and transfers from a through street.
Oregon is also unusual in the fine print. A certificate of authority from the state transport department is required to move household goods for hire between two points in Oregon — but cities of under ten thousand people are exempt from the certificate, needing a permit instead. Most states in this category have no exemption at all. Either way, Oregon publishes a list of authorized movers, which is the right place to check anybody doing an in-state job.
