New Jersey gives you a better question to ask a mover than almost any other state, and it is two letters long.
Every company moving household goods inside New Jersey needs a Public Movers and Warehousemen license, and the license comes in three kinds: PM is a license to move, PW is a license to warehouse, and PC covers both. A company holding PW is licensed to store your things and not to carry them. So “are you licensed?” is the wrong question and “which letters are on your license?” is the right one — and hardly anybody knows to ask it.
New Jersey goes further than the other states we work in: its verification register shows not only whether a license is current but the complaint history attached to it. Before you book anybody here, that register is worth two minutes.
The move itself has two shapes depending on where you are. On the waterfront — Newport, Exchange Place, Journal Square — the buildings behave like Manhattan’s: a service lift booked for a window of hours, a certificate of insurance naming the building, and management setting the terms. In the older streets it is brownstones and walk-ups, where the staircase decides what travels whole and the crew is sized for flights rather than floor area. Both are questions we settle at survey.

Thank God we found Cross Country Movers because we called them immediately, there was no room to change flights and when we called Cross Country, they gave a quote within 10 minutes, communicated excellent throughout the whole process and came the next day with a truck and packaged everything nicely.
