Long distance movers in Manhattan

Manhattan has the strictest building regime in the country: co-op boards, high insurance limits, and a service lift booked for a window of hours. There is no curb to reserve, so all of it has to be right.

  • COI at their limits issued direct to management
  • Lift window hours, not a day
  • Board approval where the co-op requires it

What a long distance move from Manhattan involves

In Manhattan the building sets the move: insurance certificate, service elevator, a booked window.

We handle all three and quote one price. It sits inside the price you were quoted rather than arriving afterwards.

The rest is the ordinary work: a survey that counts what you own, a binding price in writing, our own crew loading and delivering, and thirty days of storage if your dates slip.

What it costs

What moving from Manhattan typically costs

Price comes from weight and mileage first, then access.

Home size Typical weight To Los Angeles To Chicago
Studio or 1 bed one bedroom of contents 2,000 – 3,500 lb $2,458 – $6,177 $1,635 – $4,281
2 – 3 bedrooms the most common interstate move 4,000 – 9,000 lb $3,978 – $7,985 $2,419 – $5,753
4+ bedrooms often needs a trailer to itself 10,000 – 14,000 lb $7,409 – $12,741 $3,902 – $7,579

The dollar ranges are the MARKET rate, not our quote, and they are the NEW YORK CITY band: moveBuddha publishes its figures for the city rather than for Manhattan on its own. moveBuddha's monthly dataset of live quotes across vetted movers, last updated 31 August 2026. Weights are the industry rule of thumb. We price your move from a survey of your actual inventory and give you one binding number in writing, which is why no figure above is presented as ours.

Included and extra

What your final price includes

The complaint in this industry is always the bill that grew. This is the line between included and extra, before you have to ask.

  • Included One truck, one crew The crew that loads you is the crew that unloads you.
  • Included Storage for 30 days Useful when a closing slips.
  • Included Basic cover 60 cents for every pound an item weighs.
  • Extra Full cover Pays to repair or replace what we list together.
  • Extra Packing and crates Up to 15 boxes is partial, more than that is full.
  • Extra Car shipping Open or enclosed.

How the price is built

How your move from Manhattan works, step by step

Four points where something is decided.

  1. Survey, and the building

We count the inventory and ask management everything: limits on the certificate, which lift, what window, and whether the board has to approve us.

  2. Certificate and application

Issued and filed at their limits, well before the day. In a co-op that can include a move application.

  3. Load day, inside the window

The crew is sized for the hours the building gave you, and the curb is worked legally rather than reserved.

  4. Transit and delivery

One carrier, one crew, and a delivery window rather than a promised hour.

Building practice as commonly required by Manhattan management; the regulated part of a move is covered in the questions below.

Manhattan moving rules are set by the building, not the street

Manhattan is the hardest building environment in the country to move in, and none of the difficulty is on the street.

There is no consumer curb permit in New York at all, and Manhattan is the part of the city where even the Department of Transportation’s own temporary-sign route is least available. So the curb is worked legally rather than reserved, and everything that can be controlled is controlled inside the building instead.

That means the certificate of insurance at the limits management specifies — commonly one to two million dollars of general liability plus workers’ compensation and automobile cover, and higher in some co-ops. It means a service elevator booked one to two weeks ahead, longer in a co-op in summer, and given to you as a window of a few hours on a weekday rather than the day. And in a co-op it can mean a move application and board approval of the moving company itself.

Get all of that right and a Manhattan move is orderly. Get one piece wrong and the building simply will not let the crew in, which is why we deal with management directly rather than handing you a form to chase.

What decides a Manhattan move

The building decides everything here

Three pieces of paper and one window of hours. Nothing about the street can be fixed, so all of this has to be.

$1–2M and higher in some co-ops

The certificate limits management sets

General liability at the limits management sets, plus workers’ compensation and automobile cover. No certificate means no service lift, and no service lift means no move.

A few hours on a weekday, booked ahead

A weekday window, not a whole day

One to two weeks of notice, longer in a co-op in peak season, and what you are given is a window rather than a day. That window sets the crew size, because the whole job has to fit inside it.

Approval where the co-op requires it

Co-op board approval and deposits

A move application, and sometimes sign-off on the mover itself, plus a non-refundable fee and a refundable deposit against the lift and hallways. We supply whatever the board asks for.

Building requirements are what Manhattan management commonly asks for rather than a regulation.

Protection

Moving insurance: what your belongings are covered for

Every interstate move carries released-value liability by law, and it is lower than almost everyone expects: sixty cents per pound of the item, not what the item is worth. In a building that measures your access in hours, the things most at risk are the ones that have to be handled fastest.

What each level actually pays

Where to go next

Common questions about moving from Manhattan

323-379-1382 All moving questions
What will my building ask for?

Commonly a certificate of insurance naming it, with general liability of one to two million dollars per occurrence plus workers’ compensation and automobile cover — and higher limits in some co-ops. Management will usually not release the service elevator without it. Give us the management contact at survey and we issue it to them directly.

How far ahead is the elevator booked?

One to two weeks, and longer for a co-op in summer. What you get is a window of a few hours on a weekday rather than the whole day, and many buildings do not permit weekend moves at all. That window is what sets the crew size.

My co-op board has to approve the movers.

Common in Manhattan. Expect a move application, sometimes board sign-off on the company, a non-refundable move fee and a refundable deposit against damage to the lift and hallways. Tell us at survey and we supply what the board asks for.

Can you reserve the parking outside?

No, and nor can anyone else — New York offers no consumer moving permit, and Manhattan is the part of the city where the DOT’s own temporary-sign route is least available. The curb is worked legally rather than reserved, which is why the building side has to be right.

You are an interstate carrier — what about a move inside New York?

Different regulator. Interstate is federal: USDOT 2138595 and MC-744411, checkable on the FMCSA register. A move that starts and ends in New York is regulated by NYSDOT, which licenses movers and requires them to file their rates as a tariff.

What is my furniture actually insured for?

By default sixty cents per pound of the item — the federal released-value standard, included at no cost. That is weight, not worth. Full-value protection is the paid alternative on an inventory we declare together.

Moving out of Manhattan?

The certificate at their limits, the lift booked, and a binding number before you commit.
